Proven Simple Ways to Optimize Space in Small Apartments

In small houses it is difficult to live together in this COVID-19 situation. An Interior decor consultant in Kolkata made good room for me and my family. Now we work without interference and my mother enjoys her own life just the way she loves.

Home is where I want to be, home is where I long to be; has been heard by someone out there and now home is your workplace, your shopping mall, your park and your only place to relax and put down all your burden.

But in a city like Kolkata, not all of us are blessed with lavish houses or sprawling apartments. I live in a small two-bedroom, 800 sq. ft. flat with my parents and sister. We siblings are both working and so is my father. Given the situation of COVID-19, it becomes extremely difficult for all of us to do our work with office meetings. My poor mother has no peace or place to call her own or talk to friends while we work, as that disturbs us.

Tired of regular arguments and on a friend's recommendation, I decided to approach an Interior decor consultant in Kolkata, looking for best solutions to reimagine my house plan for maximum space management and convenience.

What can an Interior decor consultant do?

I gave her the floor plan and clicked pictures of each room in details so that she knew how to help me and where. I couldn’t change wall colors but was aware that I will need to make some other changes to get the best result. I was expecting from her some expert advice and I must say that it was value for money.

She suggested that while working we must leave one room completely unoccupied where my mother could spend her time with the door locked. She made a few alterations to my parent’s bedroom. As a person cannot be expected to sit on bed the whole day, she chose a comfortable, easily convertible sofa cum bed with a sleek design that added space to the room.

A wall-mounted television, bookshelf in light, bright colors and lovely planters with hanging plants to keep the room ambience happy. The mirror rose from the floor to a height of 6 feet with a sleek foldable wall mounted dresser. She suggested a small circular off white Kashmiri rug and two large bright cushions for a throw down on the floor. Lastly, hanging light shades with three levels of lighting from dim, brighter to bright.

Amazing space management ideas

The 10'-6 X 9' living room would accommodate two persons and the smaller bedroom would do for the third person.

She planned out a small elevation in the living room so cleverly that I was astounded. A thick ply cubicle with a flight of six wooden steps, walls and door made of slatted wood partition on three sides touching the ceiling for ease of privacy and work comfort. With space for only a foldable chair and desk and three-level lighting system with a bright wall hanging and planter that complemented the dark wooden linoleum flooring wrapping.

Cleverly, just beneath the small projecting of the elevation, she spaced a desk to support another workstation, with racks for storage. I had to remove some furniture and replace them with lighter and space reducing alternatives.

The television was placed on the wall under the elevation and most things were wall mounted to increase floor space. Tabletops were converted to glass and light furniture was preferred to create an impression of space.

She paid a lot of attention to lighting at every corner rather than having one bright light to serve all purposes. She insisted on hanging lights on sleek side holders.

Being a writer, I could work for hours on the couch. She picked a long leg sofa cum beds to create a roomy look for the bedroom where I planned to work.

Sticking to wall mounting options she made the closest, mirror and my bookshelf all wall mounted. Curtains were replaced by blinds. She had ‘If’, By Rudyard Kipling printed on a poster and fitted on a classy mount with some tasteful plants.

Conclusion

It was amazing to see how my house had a new look and I never knew there was so much space in it. I must recommend this Interior decor consultant in Kolkata to all of you who are facing the same woes as me.
